PRK vs. LASIK

While LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) remains the most popular type of laser vision correction surgery, sometimes patients choose to undergo PRK (photorefractive keratotomy) instead of LASIK. Both surgeries work by reshaping the surface of cornea and deliver similar vision correction results. However, there are several major differences between PRK and LASIK. Most importantly, PRK procedure does not require the creation of the corneal flap. Instead, a thin layer of epithelium (surface tissue of the cornea) is removed completely, allowing the surgeon to apply a cool excimer laser beam to the underlying corneal tissue. After the PRK surgery is completed, a special contact lens is often placed over the eye to serve as a bandage while the eye heals. While the recovery after PRK surgery is slightly longer than that after LASIK procedure, PRK is appropriate for a wider range of patients. For example, individuals with thin corneas, large pupils and certain corneal scars usually do not qualify for LASIK, but they can often undergo PRK.

For example, many women who desire to enlarge their bustlines schedule consultations with Milwaukee breast augmentation specialists in order to explore surgical breast enhancement options. Other procedures patients request more often include liposuction, tummy tuck and face lift surgery.
