Laser Vision Correction in Milwaukee

In a Nutshell

nutshells

Modern Laser Vision Correction can be broken down into two separate steps:

  1. Prepare the surface of the eye (the cornea)
  2. Perform the laser reshaping.
Step one, corneal surface preparation, is accomplished by either scraping off the surface, regenerative cell layers (PRK & LASEK), or by creating a more substantial flap of corneal tissue (LASIK). Surface cells can be removed by mechanical scraping with a metallic instrument (scalpel) or removed using an alcohol solution that softens the surface cells. In LASIK procedures, a more substantial flap of tissue is created by the use of either a mechanical, motor driven oscillating bladed device called a microkeratome or, more recently, an ultra-fast laser that employs plasma energy to shape a more precise and customized corneal flap.

This preparation is followed by treatment of the exposed surface with a sophisticated laser, Step Two. This laser removes microscopic amounts of tissue and creates a new surface shape as predicted by all the pre-operative testing and analysis. As in Step One, many technologic advancements have occurred in this second step of the process, such as, eye-tracking systems to keep the treatment pulses aligned, and wavefront-guided analysis to create more sophisticated, customized treatment shapes, improving the visual results and the quality of the vision.

Patients have always preferred the LASIK form of laser vision correction as the over-whelming numbers of treatments are performed this way. It is usually because of the fast recovery, minimal “down-time”, and minimal discomfort afforded by this method.

I believe that the current state–of–the–art treatment is LASIK using the Intralase ultra–fast laser to create the flap and the Visx CustomVue Active Trak excimer laser system to deliver the treatment. This is by far the predominant procedure performed today in our clinic and I predict that as technology advances and allows all patients to qualify for this treatment that it will be the only procedure we perform.

This surgery represents the most precise, uniquely safe, highest quality vision correction available anywhere in the world today. Do not be misled by deceptive advertisements and discount prices as they are in no way compatible with this level of surgery.
