Conventional Laser Eye Surgery in Milwaukee

On May 23, 2003, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved VISX CustomVue laser treatments. Whereas before, only one type of laser treatment was available, now there are two. As a result, we now refer to the previous generation of laser treatments as "conventional", and the new generation as CustomVue.

Conventional treatments are based upon measurements obtained from the tried and true phoropter instrument. This is the instrument that you sit behind and answer the seemingly endless stream of questions, "Which is better one or two?" that ultimately allow us to determine your eyeglass prescription in terms of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. This data is then entered into the laser's computer for your treatment.

Despite the fact that conventional treatments are based on what is now previous generation technology, they still represent a very reasonable option for many patients, and offer a modest cost savings. We have treated over 10,000 eyes with conventional technology, and the outstanding outcomes data presented in our statistics section is derived entirely from conventional treatments, so our confidence in these treatments is quite high.

At the time of your consultation, we will take the necessary measurements to determine your treatment options. As CustomVue treatments are not yet available for every level of correction, a minority of patients will only qualify for conventional treatments. Another minority will have characteristics on their preoperative examinations that lead us to recommend CustomVue as the only treatment option. However, the vast majority of patients will need to decide between conventional and CustomVue treatments. The Comparison Matrix found later in this section is designed to help you with this decision, by showing you the relative advantages of each treatment type.
